US equity futures were edging higher pre-bell Wednesday as traders geared up for the interest rate decision from the Federal Reserve later in the day.
Dow Jones Industrial Average futures were 0.3% higher, S&P 500 futures were up 0.4%, and Nasdaq futures rose 0.6%.
The Federal Open Market Committee's statement following Wednesday's meeting is due for release at 2:00 pm ET, with Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh's press conference scheduled to begin at 2:30 pm ET. The CME Group FedWatch indicator shows a 92.5% chance the Fed will raise rates by 0.25%.
Oil prices declined amid a Reuters report that Saudi Arabia is offering crude oil cargoes via ship-to-ship transfer at Oman's Sohar port. Further, US crude oil, gasoline, and distillate inventories increased last week, according to the report.
The front-month global benchmark North Sea Brent crude contract was down 1.2% at $107.40 per barrel, and US West Texas Intermediate crude was 1.9% lower at $103.79 per barrel.
US retail sales rose 1.2% in August, following a 0.5% decrease in the prior month and compared with expectations for a 0.8% increase in a survey compiled by Bloomberg.
US import prices rose 0.7% in August, compared with the 0.5% gain expected and the prior 0.3% decrease in July. US export prices increased 0.6% in August, compared with the 1.4% decline in the prior month and meeting expectations.
The September US housing market index, slated for 10 am ET, is expected at 34, compared with 35 from the prior month.
In other world markets, Japan's Nikkei closed 0.7% higher, Hong Kong's Hang Seng ended 0.2% higher, and China's Shanghai Composite finished 0.7% higher. Meanwhile, the UK's FTSE 100 was up 0.6%, and Germany's DAX index was 0.4% higher in Europe's early afternoon session.
In equities, SK Hynix (SKHY) and Intel (INTC) stocks were up 3.1% and 3.5%, respectively, after Reuters reported that the South Korean semiconductor firm is exploring a deal with Intel to manufacture its memory chips in the US for the first time. Nokia (NOK) shares rose 5.4% after the company and C3IA said they signed a memorandum of understanding to support digital transformation across UK defense operations.
On the losing side, Huntington Bancshares (HBAN) stock was down 1.8% after the company said it revised its adjusted 2027 earnings target range to $1.75 to $1.83 per share, reflecting lower-than-expected loan growth and net interest margins. J.B. Hunt Transport Services (JBHT) shares fell more than 11% after Chief Financial Officer Brad Delco said Tuesday that the company expects Q2 to Q3 earnings to decline 5% to 10%.
