US equity futures were edging higher pre-bell Thursday as traders evaluated the Federal Reserve's interest-rate increase and the possibility of further monetary policy tightening.
Dow Jones Industrial Average futures were 1.2% higher, S&P 500 futures were up 1.3%, and Nasdaq futures were 1.7% higher.
The US Federal Reserve raised its benchmark lending rate by 25 basis points in a unanimous vote on Wednesday to combat sticky inflation, while signaling another hike later this year. The Federal Open Market Committee lifted the federal funds rate to a range of 3.75% to 4%, the first time it has tightened monetary policy since July 2023.
"We must be confident that underlying inflation is moving to our objective, clearly and at sufficient speed," Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh said at a press conference. "Today the FOMC decided that this standard has not been satisfied."
President Donald Trump told reporters Wednesday evening that the US is "hopefully" nearing the end of the war with Iran, adding that the Middle Eastern country wants to make a deal.
Oil prices were lower, with front-month global benchmark North Sea Brent crude down 3.2% at $102.46 per barrel and US West Texas Intermediate crude 2.3% lower at $100.04 per barrel.
August housing starts dropped to a 1.275 million annual rate from 1.309 million in the previous month, compared with expectations for a 1.32 million rate in a survey compiled by Bloomberg.
Initial jobless claims fell to 196,000 in the week ended Sept. 12 from 206,000 in the previous week, compared with expectations for an increase to 207,000. The Philadelphia Federal Reserve's monthly manufacturing index declined to 37.8 in September from 47.4 in August, compared with expectations for a drop to a reading of 32.1.
Pending home sales for August, slated for 10 am ET, are seen dropping 0.1% after a decrease of 2.3% in the prior month.
In other world markets, Japan's Nikkei closed 0.3% higher, Hong Kong's Hang Seng ended 0.4% lower, and China's Shanghai Composite finished 0.4% lower. Meanwhile, the UK's FTSE 100 was up 0.9%, and Germany's DAX index was 0.9% higher in Europe's early afternoon session.
In equities, Tesla (TSLA) stock was up 2% after Forum Mobility said the electric vehicle company will operate public Megacharging sites at three of four new electric-truck depots in California. Applied Materials (AMAT) shares rose 3.8% after multiple media outlets reported that the company will invest $5 billion in India over the next 10 years. Nebius Group (NBIS) shares were 9.8% higher after the company said it is raising on-demand service rates for certain GPU, CPU and memory resources, effective Oct. 1.
On the losing side, Fluence Energy (FLNC) shares were down more than 22% after the company lowered its fiscal 2026 revenue guidance, citing ongoing supply chain issues impacting its US production.
