(Updates with the White House response in paragraphs 3-5.)
The Trump administration is weighing a temporary halt to US diesel exports as it looks to ease energy costs ahead of the midterm elections, Politico reported Wednesday, citing five people familiar with the discussions.
The proposal could last 90 days, with President Donald Trump leaning toward a decision by the end of the week, while several senior officials, including Chris Wright, Scott Bessent and Doug Burgum, oppose a full ban, the report said.
A White House official toldin an emailed response that the report was false, and noted the Energy Secretary's public comments on the matter earlier Wednesday.
The official shared a Wall Street Journal interview in which Energy Secretary Chris Wright said that the Trump administration would not impose an outright ban on diesel exports but instead pursue restrictions.
Wright said the administration wants to maintain global diesel supplies while shifting the trajectory of US prices. He said the approach would remain voluntary.
