Update: Market Chatter: Meta Platforms Faces German Criminal Complaint Over AI Smart Glasses

Meta Platforms (META) faces a criminal complaint in Germany from digital rights group HateAid over the sale of its AI-powered smart glasses, particularly the Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer, Reuters reported Wednesday.

HateAid alleges the glasses violate German privacy laws against covert recording and also named EssilorLuxottica units and retailers including Fielmann, Apollo-Optik, Mister Spex and MediaMarkt, the report said.

Germany's Federal Network Agency is closely monitoring the smart-glasses market but is not currently formally investigating any violations, Reuters reported, citing a spokesperson for the country's digital communications regulator.

In a statement emailed to, a Meta Platforms spokesperson said its smart glasses, developed with EssilorLuxottica, passed review by Germany's BNetzA in 2022 and include privacy safeguards such as a non-disableable white capture LED, tamper detection and camera deactivation if the LED is covered or damaged.
