The UK government has entered an agreement with France's EDF that will extend the life of the Sizewell B nuclear power station by 20 years through 2055, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero said in a press release on Wednesday.
The plant currently provides about 3% of all electricity consumed in the UK.
The government agreed with EDF a cntract for difference fee of 70.50 British pounds ($94.29) starting in 2035, the statement said. The deal also provides for support from Centrica, which owns a 20% stake in the plant.
The government said the deal is currently an agreement on head of terms and a final deal will follow, subject to development of a long-form contract and regulatory approvals, with further announcements on these to follow.
The government said that elsewhere in the nuclear sector, it is supporting the construction of the UK's first small modular reactors, in Anglesey alongside the large Sizewell C project.
