UK's energy regulator Ofgem on Friday identified 16 long-duration electricity storage projects that will advance to the selection phase to qualify for support under its cap-and-floor scheme.
The selected projects under a Minded-to-Decision list are located in Scotland, England, and Wales. They use different technologies, including pumped storage hydro, compressed air energy storage, lithium-ion batteries and vanadium redox flow batteries.
LDES can help balance power supply and demand, especially for renewable energy, since they can store and release electricity for at least eight hours, according to the statement.
Ofgem has opened a consultation, which will run through Aug. 7, to gather stakeholder views on the projects.
The energy regulator expects to provide a final list of projects that will qualify under its cap and floor support later this year.
