Stocks in the United Arab Emirates closed higher on Thursday as the FTSE ADX General Index gained 0.466% and the DFM General Index added 0.337%.
The UAE Central Bank increased the base rate applicable to the overnight deposit facility to 3.9% from 3.65% and kept the interest rate applicable to borrowing short-term liquidity at 50 basis points above the base rate for all standing credit facilities.
The Emirati regulator's move aligns with the US Federal Reserve's decision to hike its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points to the 3.75% to 4% target range as the Emirati dirham is pegged to the US dollar.
"We expect the Federal Reserve to follow Wednesday's 25bp rate hike with another in December before moving to the sidelines for an extended pause as inflation gradually moves lower. We've pushed back rate cuts in our forecast to 2028, from late 2027, and expect them to bottom out at a higher neutral rate of 3.25%-3.5%," Oxford Economics said.
Back home, UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and his Senegalese counterpart Bassirou Diomaye Faye discussed strengthening economic and investment ties and addressed regional and international issues during the latter's working visit to the UAE.
Over to corporates, Aldar Properties (ADX:ALDAR) gained 2.39% at closing and was the Abu Dhabi bourse's most traded stock by value. The property company launched its exclusive 351-villa Talay residential project at the Marsa Al Saadiyat development in Abu Dhabi.
Meanwhile, in Dubai, Parkin Co. (DFM:PARKIN) partnered with uPay to launch a new payment channel for its customers, enabling them to top up their wallets using cash through uPay kiosks across the country. Parkin added 2.02% at the close.
