US President Donald Trump on Monday claimed that Iran has requested a meeting with US in Doha on Tuesday, contradicting an earlier claim by an Iranian official who reportedly refuted any plans of a meeting between the two countries this week.
"Iran has requested a meeting. It will take place tomorrow in Doha!," Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Earlier in the day, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said that the country does not have any plans of having a meeting with representatives of US "technical team" in Qatar this week, according to multiple media reports.
Several media oulets had reported earlier that talks between the two countries are likely to be held in Doha on Tuesday. Gharibabadi, however, said consultations with Qatar, including follow-up on the implementation of the other party's commitments, were continuing as usual.
The first round of technical discussions between the designated working groups of the two countries would take place once conditions are met and a date and location had been agreed upon, Gharibabadi said. Consultations on this matter were continuing through intermediary countries.
The contradictory claims follow the latest round of strikes traded between the US and Iran, with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claiming to have struck eight US military facilities in Kuwait and Bahrain, in retaliation against US strikes against Iran late last week, according to a report by Al Jazeera.
