Toyota Motor (TYO:7203) reported Thursday that its first-half global sales and production declined for the first time in two years, hit by slowing overseas demand.
The Japanese automaker sold just over 5 million vehicles in the six months ended June 30, down 2.9% from a year earlier, according to a Thursday news release.
While domestic sales rose 4.7% to 804,721 vehicles, the gain was offset by a 4.3% drop in overseas sales to 4.2 million vehicles.
Global production fell 1.2% to 4.86 million vehicles. While domestic output edged up 0.7% to 1.65 million units, overseas production fell 2.2% to 3.2 million units.
The figures include sales and production at Toyota's luxury brand Lexus.
