Rocket Lab (RKLB) agreed to acquire satellite communications provider Iridium Communications (IRDM) in a cash-and-stock deal valued at about $8 billion to create a vertically integrated space company, the companies said in a joint statement on Monday.

Shares of Rocket Lab jumped 15% following an increase in intraday trading volume to over 28 million from a daily average of about 27.5 million.
