Texas Governor Greg Abbott has directed the state's Commission on Environmental Quality to halt permit issuance for data centers until the Electric Reliability Council of Texas and the Texas Water Development Board finish auditing the industry's resource demands, according to a statement on Monday.
The pause aims to protect local communities, ensure grid reliability, and safeguard water supplies amid surging energy consumption from tech infrastructure, it said.
Under the directive, the PUCT, ERCOT, and TWDB will evaluate whether data centers compromise electricity supply reliability or jeopardize natural resources.
Future projects will be required to cover all infrastructure costs, reduce residential electric bills, comply with strict water-reporting laws, and abide by community setback requirements, according to the statement.
The commission must now report back to the governor's office confirming the permitting pause by October 19, the statement said.
