A tanker traveling through the Gulf of Aden was hijacked by six armed people on Thursday and is being redirected toward Somalia, according to a report received by the UK's Maritime Trade Operations Center.
The incident occurred about 136 nautical miles east of Al Mukalla, Yemen, according to the alert issued by the UKMTO, with the exact time yet to be confirmed.
The tanker, which was traveling west through the Gulf of Aden, initially broadcast a distress call on VHF Channel 16 after being approached by an unauthorized vessel.
Authorities are investigating the incident, UKMTO said, while advising vessels in the surrounding area to transit with caution and report any suspicious activity.
