Swedish transport operator Nobina will deploy 27 new Scania buses powered by biogas, in agreement with the public transport authority Skanetrafiken, automaker Scania said in a statement on Thursday.
The benefits of the fuel produced from waste include carbon dioxide emission reductions and increased fuel supply security as well as the promotion of the domestic biogas industry, which will provide the renewable fuel.
The buses will run on the Malmo-Lund/Kristianstad routes and have been designed according to Skanetrafiken's requirements. The biogas powertrain is also quieter than a diesel-powered one.
The buses will expand an existing fleet of Scania biogas buses already in use in collaboration with Skanetrafiken, the statement said.
The bodies of the buses will be produced by Irizar and will be the Scania Irizar i4 model, which has found success with a biogas powertrain in Southern Europe, the statement said.
