Surrozen (SRZN) said Tuesday that it submitted an investigational new drug application to the US Food and Drug Administration seeking to evaluate SZN-8141 as a potential treatment for diabetic macular edema.
The company said it expects to launch a phase 1b/2a study in diabetic macular edema patients by the end of 2026, and anticipates initial data in H2 of 2027.
Surrozen said preclinical studies showed that SZN-8141 delivered "superior" biological activity in reducing neovascularization and promoting retinal revascularization in a rodent model of retinal vascular disease, compared with either Wnt agonist or anti-VEGF monotherapy.
SZN-8141 also demonstrated further reductions in vascular leakage than anti-VEGF therapy in a rodent model of neovascular age-related macular degeneration, the company said.
Shares of the company were down 2% in Tuesday trading.
