Sony Group (TYO:6758) and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing or TSMC (TPE:2330) signed a definitive agreement to establish Advanced Vision Semiconductor Manufacturing - a joint venture in Kumamoto, Japan - confirming earlier reports.
The JV will develop and manufacture image sensors for smartphones using advanced process technology, with volume production targeted for 2029, according to a Tuesday press release.
Sony, being the controlling shareholder, plans to invest about 465 billion yen through cash and asset transfers, while TSMC will contribute about 282 billion yen in cash. The investments will be made in stages, depending on market demand and other business conditions.
Under the partnership, Sony will lead core image sensor technology development, product planning and design, while TSMC will provide advanced manufacturing technology and production expertise.
The JV's establishment remains subject to regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions.
