Sector Update: Tech Stocks Mixed Late Afternoon

Tech stocks were mixed late Friday afternoon, with the State Street Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) down 0.1% and the State Street SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF (XSD) rising 1.6%.

The Philadelphia Semiconductor index added 1%.

In corporate news, Amazon's (AMZN) Web Services cloud-computing unit reported overnight the fastest sales growth in 18 quarters, helping the e-commerce giant handily exceed market expectations for Q2 earnings and revenue. Its shares jumped past 15%.

Apple (AAPL) shares fell past 8% after the company missed market estimates for iPad and services revenue in its fiscal Q3 results released late Thursday. The tech giant recently increased prices for MacBooks and iPads amid surging memory and storage chip costs.

NXP Semiconductors (NXPI) is in talks to buy Ambarella (AMBA), a designer of chips used in the camera technology for self-driving cars, the Financial Times reported. Ambarella shares surged 17%, and NXP shares were down 6%.

Roblox (RBLX) shares fell 27% in Friday trading after it withdrew its 2026 guidance.

Financial stocks were higher in late Thursday afternoon trading, with the NYSE Financial Index rising 1.1% and the State Street Financial Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLF) up 0.5%.The Philadelphia Housing Index was falling 1.9%, and the State Street Real Estate Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLRE) was shedding 1.5%.Bitcoin (BTC-USD) was increasing 1.3% to $64,746, and the yield for 10-year US Treasuries rose 4.1 basis points to 4.663%.In economic news, the US personal consumption expenditure price index fell 0.1% month over month in June, marking the first decline since April 2020, the Bureau of Economic Analysis reported Thursday.
