Sector Update: Tech Stocks Decline Friday Afternoon

Tech stocks were lower Friday afternoon, with the State Street Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) decreasing 0.3% and the State Street SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF (XSD) falling 4.3%.

The Philadelphia Semiconductor index shed 2.7%.

In sector news, President Donald Trump said Friday on Truth Social his administration is opening a Section 301 investigation into the EU over fines it has levied against companies including Apple (AAPL), Meta (META), Amazon.com (AMZN) and Alphabet's (GOOGL) Google. "The European Union will pay a very big price for this illegal and highly unethical conduct, which I have consistently warned them about," Trump said.

In corporate news, Qualcomm (QCOM) told customers it is raising prices by a percentage in the double digits, Bloomberg reported, citing a copy of a letter it viewed. Qualcomm shares were down 1.4%.

Oracle (ORCL) has secured a 10-year enterprise software contract worth about $7 billion with the US Department of Defense. Oracle shares were down 1%.

Amkor Technology (AMKR) shares fell 0.5%. The company said late Thursday it has launched a multiyear partnership with Nvidia (NVDA) to develop semiconductor packaging and test technologies for AI and accelerated computing platforms.

Sector Update: Healthcare Stocks Rise Late Afternoon

Healthcare stocks advanced late Thursday afternoon with the NYSE Healthcare Index gaining 1.2% and the State Street Health Care Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLV) rising 1.1%.The iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) added 1%.In corporate news, Thermo Fisher Scientific (TMO) shares jumped 8.9% after fiscal Q2 adjusted earnings and revenue topped estimates.Quest Diagnostics (DGX) shares rose 8% after Q2 adjusted earnings and revenue exceeded market consensus.Neuphoria Therapeutics (NEUP) agreed to be acquired by Scancell Holdings in an all-stock deal. Sector Update: Energy Stocks Gain Late Afternoon

Energy stocks rose late Thursday afternoon with the NYSE Energy Sector Index gaining 1.1% and the State Street Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLE) adding 0.7%.The Philadelphia Oil Service Sector Index shed 0.1%, and the Dow Jones US Utilities Index increased 0.5%.Brent crude futures topped $100 a barrel for the first time since May after the US-Iran conflict widened, with Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis claiming attacks on two Saudi Arabian oil tankers in the Red Sea, news outlets reported.West Texas Intermediate crude oil jumped 5.8% to $91.90 a barrel, and global benchmark Brent surged 6.7% to $100.37.
