Sector Update: Energy

Energy stocks were declining pre-bell Monday, with the State Street Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLE) falling 2.6%.

The United States Oil Fund (USO) was down 6.3% and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) was 3.1% lower.

Front-month US West Texas Intermediate crude oil was 5.9% lower at $84.04 per barrel at the New York Mercantile Exchange. Global benchmark North Sea Brent crude oil fell 6.4% to $90.55 per barrel, and natural gas futures were down 3.4% at $2.77 per 1 million British Thermal Units.

TotalEnergies (TTE) has decided to appeal a June 25 ruling by the Paris Judicial Court in a climate-related duty-of-vigilance case, the company said. Shares of TotalEnergies were down more than 3% premarket.

Sector Update: Energy Stocks Mixed Late Afternoon

Energy stocks were mixed late Friday afternoon, with the NYSE Energy Sector Index 0.1% lower and the State Street Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLE) up 0.3%.The Philadelphia Oil Service Sector Index climbed up 2.9%, and the Dow Jones US Utilities Index was up 0.1%.West Texas Intermediate crude oil fell 3% to $89.45 a barrel, and global benchmark Brent dropped 3.9% to $96.80 a barrel. Henry Hub natural gas futures shed 1.3% to $2.88 per 1 million BTU.In corporate news, SLB (SLB) shares jumped past 10% after its Q2 adjusted earnings and revenue topped market estimates.NextEra Energy (NEE) reported mixed Q2 results with adjusted earnings topping estimates and operating revenue trailing Wall Street forecasts. Shares were 0.2% lower.BP (BP) is in advanced talks to sell its solar power arm Lightsource to a consortium comprising Qualitas Energy, a private equity firm focused on green energy, and Wren House, the infrastructure arm of the Kuwait Investment Authority, Reuters reported. BP shares were down 0.4%.American Resources (AREC) said Friday it will pay a special dividend of 4.31 cents per share, payable on Aug. 25 to shareholders of record Aug. 15. Shares were down 2%.

Sector Update: Financial Stocks Advance Late Afternoon

Financial stocks rose in late Friday afternoon trading, with the NYSE Financial Index adding 0.8% and the State Street Financial Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLF) increasing 0.7%.The Philadelphia Housing Index gained 1.6%, and the State Street Real Estate Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLRE) added 2.3%.Bitcoin (BTC-USD) was declining 1.5% to $64,087, and the yield for 10-year US Treasuries shed 2.4 basis points to 4.679%.In economic news, the July flash reading of manufacturing conditions from S&P Global slipped to 53.8 from 53.9 in June, compared with the 54.4 print expected in a survey compiled by Bloomberg.New-home sales rose to a 628,000 annual rate in June from an upwardly revised 618,000 rate in May, compared with the 607,000 rate expected in a survey compiled by Bloomberg. Home sales were still down 5.6% from a year ago.In corporate news, Digital Realty Trust (DLR) reported Q2 core funds from operations and operating revenue above market expectations late Thursday, and the company also raised its 2026 core FFO and revenue guidance. Shares surged past 11%.BlackRock (BLK) started marketing $12.3 billion in high-grade bonds to finance a Meta Platforms (META) data center project, Bloomberg reported. BlackRock shares rose 1.7%.American Express' (AXP) Q2 earnings topped Wall Street's estimates, but revenue missed expectations, while the company now expects full-year revenue to grow at the high end of its previous guidance range. Its shares fell 4.6%.Tompkins Financial (TMP) shares jumped past 8% after it reported better-than-expected Q2 results.Safety Insurance (SAFT) shares soared 42%. The company said late Thursday it entered an agreement to be acquired by an affiliate of Mapfre in a $1.54 billion all-cash deal.

Sector Update: Consumer Stocks Rise Late Afternoon

Consumer stocks advanced late Friday afternoon, with the State Street Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLP) rising 1% and the State Street Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLY) increasing 0.4%.In corporate news, MarineMax (HZO) shares jumped past 8% after Reuters reported that Blackstone (BX) is among the final bidders to buy the company. Donerail and Centerbridge are also finalists, the report said.Rivian Automotive (RIVN) filed a lawsuit in the US Court of International Trade seeking refunds of tariffs it paid under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act after the US Supreme Court ruled the levies were unlawful, according to a Thursday court filing. Rivian shares were down 3.9%.Lamb Weston (LW) provided upbeat full-year earnings guidance after delivering a fiscal Q4 beat, while the company said disruption from the Middle East conflict weighed on its business in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Its shares were down 0.5%.Verizon Communications (VZ) raised its full-year earnings outlook on Friday amid phone subscriber gains in Q2, while Charter Communications (CHTR) reported a decline in broadband customers due to competitive pressures. Verizon shares gained 5.2%, and Charter fell 2.9%.Starbucks (SBUX) is expected to report continued sales momentum in fiscal Q3 as its turnaround plans and new sales initiatives supported a recovery in the US business, UBS Securities said in a note. Starbucks shares added 0.6%.
