Santos has signed a 10-year agreement to supply 200 petajoules of natural gas to the South Australian government's Strategic Gas Reserve from 2030, to support the state's domestic energy security and the long-term future of its Cooper Basin operations, the company said in a statement on Monday.
Under the agreement, Santos will supply 20 petajoules of gas annually between March 2030 and 2040, with deliveries from Moomba under an indexed pricing and prepayment arrangement. The contract begins when Santos' Horizon gas supply agreement with the GLNG joint venture expires.
The company said the prepayment structure would help fund its Moomba Central Optimization project, approved in March, which aims to improve production efficiency by replacing seven aging gas-powered compressor stations with a single electric-driven facility and upgrading infrastructure at the Moomba gas plant.
Santos said the agreement would support the long-term development of the Cooper Basin's Central Fields, which contain more than half of the basin's remaining proved and probable gas reserves.
