S&P 500 CEO Pay Soars, Driven by Musk Package, AFL-CIO Study Says

By

CEOs of companies listed on the S&P 500 made $340.1 million on average in 2025, up 1,700% from a year earlier, the AFL-CIO said Thursday in its Executive Paywatch report.

Much of the jump reflected Tesla (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk's $158 billion compensation package, which "broke the CEO pay curve," the study said.

"The average CEO-to-worker pay ratio across S&P 500 Index companies was 5,387-to-1," the study said. "Musk's total compensation at Tesla was 2,522,203 times the median Tesla employee's pay in 2025. Excluding Musk, the average pay ratio of S&P 500 companies increased from 285-to-1 in 2024 to 312-to-1 in 2025."

Tesla didn't immediately reply to a request for comment from.
