Repsol, in partnership with Toyota Motor Europe, BMW and Bosch, has launched a six-month pilot project in Spain to demonstrate the potential of vehicles operating exclusively on renewable fuels, it said in a Wednesday statement.
The initiative, which began in early July, will deploy a fleet of approximately 20 Toyota and BMW vehicles powered by Repsol's 100% renewable gasoline with fuel usage monitored through Bosch's digital tracking technology.
The companies said the pilot is designed to provide real-world evidence that renewable fuels can support large-scale vehicle deployment and contribute to Europe's mobility decarbonization goals through a technology-neutral approach that complements other solutions.
The demonstration will focus on three areas, ensuring the market availability of renewable gasoline, validating digital fuel-tracking and certification systems, and demonstrating the operational readiness of vehicle fleets using renewable fuels with existing infrastructure.
Repsol said its fuel station network in Spain is currently the only public retail network in the country offering 100% renewable gasoline.
The company's renewable gasoline is produced from feedstocks compliant with the EU's Renewable Energy Directive and is designed to deliver significant greenhouse gas reductions compared with conventional fossil fuels while remaining compatible with existing gasoline vehicles and fuel infrastructure.
Bosch's "Digital Fuel Twin" technology will collect and verify refueling data from multiple sources, including vehicle information, service stations and fuel card transactions.
The system is intended to provide transparent lifecycle tracking and certification of renewable fuel consumption.
The project will involve Toyota and BMW vehicles operating under real-world conditions to demonstrate that existing vehicle fleets can transition to 100% renewable fuels without requiring changes to current infrastructure.
Spain was selected as the location for the pilot due to the availability of renewable gasoline, collaboration among industry partners and operational support from Toyota Espana, the companies said.
