Public Service Electric & Gas Co. filed a proposal to reduce residential gas heating bills by approximately 5%, effective Oct. 1, it said in a statement on Friday.
The utility said the proposed decrease reflects its long-term natural gas procurement strategy, which helped shield customers from significant price fluctuations during a volatile natural gas market this past winter. PSE&G serves nearly 1.9 million gas customers across New Jersey.
According to the company, its year-round planning process includes monitoring energy markets, forecasting customer demand, and securing natural gas supplies ahead of peak winter heating season. The approach is designed to limit exposure to market volatility and provide more stable and predictable heating costs for customers.
PSE&G said its procurement strategy has helped maintain the lowest residential gas bills in New Jersey and the surrounding region while supporting reliable service during periods of high demand.
"Keeping energy affordable for our customers requires planning, discipline, and a long-term approach," said Brian Clark, senior vice president of Gas Operations. "By securing supply in advance, maintaining access to valuable storage resources and managing costs responsibly, we're able to help customers avoid many of the market swings that can lead to higher winter heating bills."
The proposed bill reduction remains subject to regulatory review and approval.
