Portugal said the Chinese government's 25% stake in REN will not change amid its plans to raise its holdings in the gas grid operator.
The Portuguese government plans to raise its stake up to 20% from the current 13.7%. The state returned to the company 12 years after its bailout.
The Portuguese state said in a statement that it is in its interest for China's State Grid to remain REN's reference shareholder.
Geopolitical tensions and the rising demand for artificial intelligence are among the main factors for Portugal's decision to re-acquire a stake in REN.
