In the futures, the S&P 500 fell 0.3%, the Nasdaq declined 0.4% and the Dow Jones was off 0.5%.
West Texas Intermediate crude oil traded up 2% at $94.89 a barrel in morning action, while yields on 10-year US Treasuries topped 4.80%.
Apple's (AAPL) annual iPhone event is slated for 1 pm ET, with three new models anticipated.
Asian exchanges traded mixed overnight, while European bourses tracked lower midday on the continent.
On the economic calendar is the Q2 services survey at 10 am ET.
In pre-market action, bitcoin traded at $79,086, and spot gold commanded $4,396 an ounce.
