NuScale Power (SMR) said on Tuesday that it is deploying nuclear-specific artificial intelligence tools to accelerate engineering and knowledge-management work as it pushes its small modular reactor technology toward commercial deployment.
The nuclear technology firm is working with Nuclearn and NPX to develop AI tools to help engineers retrieve, interpret, and apply information from technical documents, licensing records, engineering standards, and proprietary company knowledge.
NuScale said an initial proof of concept showed that AI tailored to nuclear terminology and workflows could cut the time needed to locate relevant information by about 80%.
The system is also designed to surface applicable engineering methods and standards and maintain traceability to the underlying controlled sources.
Nuclearn is providing its AtomAssist nuclear AI platform, while NPX is contributing nuclear project expertise and AI implementation capabilities. The companies are combining those systems with NuScale's proprietary engineering and licensing information.
NuScale is developing its NuScale Power Modules, a small modular reactor technology designed to be deployed as part of nuclear power plants.
The company plans to advance a near-term deployment model as demand for nuclear power grows amid rising electricity needs and efforts to expand low-carbon generation.
