Novo Nordisk Wins UK Approval for Wegovy Weight-Loss Pill

By

Novo Nordisk (NVO) won approval from UK regulators for its Wegovy pill, a daily oral version of semaglutide, for weight management in adults with obesity or overweight and a weight-related condition.

The approval was based on data from a Phase 3 trial, Novo Nordisk said Thursday in a statement. Patients receiving semaglutide tablets achieved average weight loss of 13.6% after 64 weeks, compared with 2.4% for those receiving placebo, alongside lifestyle modifications, the company said.

The UK is the first country in Europe to approve the medicine, which Novo Nordisk expects to make available via private prescription within weeks, the company said. The approval follows similar decisions in the US and the United Arab Emirates.
