New Zealand shares ended lower on Thursday as Asian markets saw losses after Wednesday's Wall Street sell-off and continued attacks on oil vessels in the Middle East.
The S&P/NZX 50 fell 0.78% or 108.42 points to close at 13,711.01.
Overnight, the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.6%, the S&P 500 lost 0.5%, and the Dow Jones decreased 0.8%.
Iran said on Wednesday it had struck 10 vessels near the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation after the US sank five Iranian oil tankers, marking the largest wave of shipping attacks by either side since the conflict began six months ago, according to a Reuters report.
In domestic news, the New Zealand Light Traffic Index fell 1.2% in August and was down 0.7% from a year earlier, according to data from ANZ Research.
In corporate news, Precinct Properties NZ Ltd & Precinct Properties Investments (NZE:PCT) confirmed that the sale of its 50% interest in Auckland's PwC Tower to an investment partnership with investment firm PAG is unconditional after securing the required consents.
Bankers Investment Trust's (NZE:BIT) unaudited net asset value was 1.616 pounds sterling per share as of Tuesday.
