Natural gas was the dominant topic during a day of investor meetings in New York, with clients focused on supply-demand balances through 2027, basis trends, and power market fundamentals, TPH Energy Research analyst Matt Portillo said in a note on Wednesday.
He said investors wanted to discuss analysts' latest views on natural gas supply and demand balances heading into 2027, the recent improvement in the outlook for Waha basis over the next 12 months, Northeast supply-demand balances over the medium and long term, and updated views on power markets in Texas and the Northeast.
The Western Haynesville also drew interest following Comstock Resources' transaction with Sixth Street, Portillo said. Investors were additionally intrigued by the potential impact of SpaceX's planned Terafab facility in Grimes County, Texas, which TPH estimates could require up to 10 gigawatts of power over the long term, as well as the implications for nearby assets owned by operators, including Magnolia Oil & Gas.
Among companies under TPH coverage, Antero Resources, Expand Energy, EQT Corp., and Comstock Resources received the most attention, although interest extended across the firm's natural gas-focused coverage universe.
Investors generally remain cautious on near-term natural gas fundamentals, in line with TPH's view. However, sentiment is beginning to shift toward the belief that the sector could be approaching a cyclical bottom within the next 12 months, with equities potentially finding a floor before fundamentals improve, Portillo said.
