Another tanker has been reportedly struck while transiting through the Gulf of Oman on Thursday, making it the third such attack by US forces this week, according to a Bloomberg report, citing maritime intelligence firm Vanguard Tech.
The asphalt and bitumen tanker, identified as Jalveer, reported that it was in distress, with its engine room on fire, while sailing off the coast of Oman. So far, no side has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The Indian-crewed merchant vessel, which primarily transported bitumen and asphalt between the UAE and India, is not under any government sanctions, although ship tracking data shows that the ship was used to transport cargo from Iran to India in 2023.
One crew member on the vessel has confirmed to authorities in Oman's Shinas Port that all seafarers onboard were safe, and were awaiting rescue.
Tanger Ship Management, which handles the technical and commercial operations of MT Jalveer, did not immediately respond to' request for a comment on this story.
