Thailand is leveraging the global oil shock to accelerate its transition toward electrification and domestically sourced energy, viewing the supply crisis as an opportunity to bolster long-term energy security, Bloomberg reported on Thursday, citing the country's energy minister.
Soaring prices have spurred government efforts to electrify the economy, including a push to adopt more battery-powered vehicles, as policymakers seek to curb dependence on imported crude, which accounts for about 90% of the nation's oil supply.
"We have to prepare for all scenarios," Energy Minister Akanat Promphan said. "The disruption to the oil supply means that Thailand, like many countries, is speeding up the energy transition process."
