Market Chatter: Thai Government Denies Plans to Increase VAT

-- The Thai government does not plan to increase value-added tax (VAT) to 10% from 7%, The Bangkok Post reported Wednesday citing deputy government spokeswoman Rachada Dhnadirek.

Rachada denied reports of a hike and labelled them as misinformation, emphasizing the focus of the government on reducing the cost of living for the public, according to the report.

Rachada also clarified that remarks by Deputy Prime Minister Pakorn Nilprapunt about the government potentially bypassing bureaucratic channels to issue an emergency decree to allow substantial borrowing are merely legal in nature.

Council Danucha Pichayanan, secretary-general of the National Economic and Social Development, reiterated that VAT will remain unchanged, The Bangkok Post said.
