Samsung (KRX:005930) and SK Hynix (KRX:000660) are testing Advanced Micro-Fabrication Equipment or AMEC's (SHA:688012) etching gear at their China facilities to hedge against possible U.S. export curbs, Reuters reported Wednesday, citing three people close to the matter.
The evaluation process, which began roughly two years ago amid growing policy uncertainty, has not yet led to broader adoption decisions, the news wire said.
If successful, these trials could give the Chinese supplier a significant credibility boost from two of the global semiconductor industry's biggest players, the publication said.
Samsung, SK Hynix, AMEC, and the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS), which enforces the U.S. government's export controls, did not immediately respond to' request for comment.
