Market Chatter: Singapore Government Defends SIA's Overseas Push, Air India Investment

By

The Singapore government has defended Singapore Airlines' (SGX:C6L) investments in foreign carriers, including its 25% stake in loss‑making Air India, Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow told Parliament Tuesday, according to media reports.

Siow said it was important for the flag carrier to expand overseas, given limited passenger volumes within Singapore. He further noted that SIA funds its investments from its own balance sheet without seeking shareholder financing, as per the reports.

Singapore Airlines owns a 25% stake in Air India, while Indian conglomerate Tata Group holds the majority 75% stake.
