Zarubezhneft, a state-owned Russian energy company, has inked a preliminary deal with Vietnam's Petrovietnam to work on a strategic oil reserve project in Vietnam, Reuters reported Wednesday.
The companies did not disclose the project timeline, the planned size of the oil reserve, or the financial terms of the agreement, the report said. The deal was reached during Vietnamese President To Lam's visit to Russia.
In an official statement issued Wednesday, Russia proposed jointly developing strategic fuel reserves in Vietnam with its Vietnamese partners.
"Our companies are also interested in establishing transit energy supplies through Vietnamese territory to neighboring countries," Russian President Vladimir Putin said in his statement as per transcripts shared by the official President of Russia website. "Incidentally, those countries have also approached us with a request to organize this work together with our Vietnamese friends," Putin said.
Zarubezhneft did not immediately respond to' request for comment, while Petrovietnam could not be reached.
