The share of renewable energy in India's power mix reached a record of 19% in June, as renewable generation rose 23% year over year to 33.81 terawatt-hours, Reuters reported Friday, citing government data.
At the same time, India's coal-fired power generation climbed 14% year over year to 120.20 TWh in June, the highest since November 2023, as hot, dry weather drove demand for cooling.
The country experienced its fifth-driest June since 1901 last month due to a strong El Nino weather phenomenon. Consequent higher power demand pushed generation up 10.4% from a year earlier to 178.31 TWh, the report said.
The Ministry of Power did not immediately respond to' request for comment.
