Poland's Orlen has said it could reach an agreement by the end of this year with billionaire Michal Solowow on a joint nuclear reactor venture as lengthy talks on a deal make progress, Bloomberg reported on Thursday.
Orlen CEO Ireneusz Fafara told the news agency in an interview that only a small number of issues on which they differ need to be ironed out in order for the two sides to reach agreement on the project.
Poland is seeking to reduce its consumption of coal for power generation including through the use of nuclear power. It aims to start up its first nuclear reactor in 2036 and is also looking at small modular reactors as replacements for coal plants coming due for retirement as well as renewables coupled with storage.
The Polish company has been in talks with Synthos Green Energy that Solowow controls, for five years, with progress slowed by political changes in the country that changed the approach taken by Synthos, including over the division of responsibilities at the first nuclear reactor in Wloclawek.
