Two liquefied natural gas tankers appeared to conduct a ship-to-ship transfer near Sohar on the Gulf of Oman on Saturday outside the Strait of Hormuz, Bloomberg reported Monday, citing satellite imagery and TankerTrackers.com.
The two tankers were identified as vessels owned by BW Gas LNG Carriers, part of BW Group, and Abu Dhabi National Oil Company. One vessel's transponder remained active while the other's was switched off, according to the report.
This could mark the first known transfer of Persian Gulf LNG outside Hormuz, as ship-to-ship LNG moves are less common than oil transfers due to the challenge of keeping the fuel super-chilled, the report added. Adnoc and BW did not immediately reply to' request for comment.
