LNG Canada is weighing a final investment decision before year-end for its Phase 2 expansion in British Columbia, Reuters reported Friday, citing sources.
The proposed expansion in Kitimat, British Columbia, would add an additional 14 million metric tons per annum of liquefied natural gas capacity, effectively doubling the facility's total output to 28 mtpa, the report said.
Driven by tight global markets, producer outages and rising Asian demand for cleaner-burning fuels, the project benefits from strategic Pacific Coast shipping routes and a recent agreement enabling a coalition of five neighboring First Nations to invest up to C$1 billion ($714.31 million).
While the Phase 1 facility shipped its first cargo earlier this year, the progression of Phase 2 remains subject to joint venture participants independently satisfying commercial, fiscal and regulatory requirements, it said.
