Japan is in talks with the United States to build a semiconductor plant as part of its $550 billion investment commitments under the Japan-US tariff deal, Nikkei reported Thursday, citing government officials from the two countries.

The project is expected to be between two trillion and three trillion yen, and the two countries are negotiating over an investment recovery from the project.

The US-based contract chipmaker GlobalFoundries is expected to operate the new factory, where logic semiconductors would be manufactured.

The Japan Economic Ministry and USTR did not immediately respond to a request for comment from.
