Market Chatter: Japan Mulls Revising Gasoline Subsidy Target from September

By

Japan's government is considering revising the current gasoline subsidy target of approximately 170 yen per liter for regular gasoline, raising it to 175 yen per liter starting in September, Kyodo News reported on Tuesday, citing multiple unnamed sources.

The current subsidy level will be maintained through August to accommodate increased gasoline demand during the summer travel season, before being reduced after the peak period ends, the news daily said.

The proposed 175 yen target matches the level set in 2025, when the Middle East situation last worsened, and subsidies have been in place since March 2026 following crude oil price surges, the publication said.
