Japan plans to amend its nuclear regulations to require review of counterterrorism measures during the design phase of the new nuclear power plants, streamlining approvals and construction, Nikkei Asia reported Friday.
The Nuclear Regulation Authority has proposed changes as Japan prepares to replace up to five reactors by 2040 and 14 by 2050, with the law expected to be amended as early as 2027, the report said.
Under the current regulation, the counterterrorism measure review is conducted before nuclear fuel is loaded in the nuclear facility, after construction plans have been finalized, according to the report.
