Iran has proposed a plan to collect about $40 billion a year by imposing charges on vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for maritime protection and environmental services, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday, citing officials familiar with the matter.
Iran based the proposal on Turkey's system for the Dardanelles and has discussed the framework with Persian Gulf countries and China, seeking backing for an arrangement that would divide the income among participating nations, according to the report.
Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not immediately reply to' request for comment.
