Market Chatter: Huawei's Top Scientist Warns of Chip Production Limit Challenges in Global Chipmakers

By

Huawei's top semiconductor scientist, Liao Heng, warned about the limits of chip production in Western chipmakers, such as Nvidia, according to Bloomberg News on Tuesday, citing an interview streamed through online platform Bilibili.

Liao discussed in the four-hour interview some of the challenges the Chinese tech giant faced when the U.S. imposed sanctions that restricted its access to global chipmakers and his view on the best path in designing chips, the report said.

Lao also talked about the Tau Scaling Law, which proposed replacing geometric scaling with time scaling in semiconductor development. The principle was expounded by Huawei's He Tingbo in May.

The Tau Scaling Law is set on improving transmission speeds as the size of transistors are being scaled down. The law enabled Huawei to develop technologies like LogicFolding, in which a smartphone based on the technology is about to be unveiled, according to the media outlet.
