Chinese technology company Huawei denied wrongdoing as its U.S. criminal trial on allegations of trade secret theft opened in Brooklyn, Nikkei Asia reported Thursday.
Brian Heberlig, Huawei's lawyer, told a Brooklyn jury that the company's rise was built on competition, innovation and ordinary business dealings-not racketeering, theft or fraud, according to the report. He dismissed the alleged trade secret thefts as isolated incidents over two decades and criticized prosecutors for relying on cherry-picked facts and unreliable witnesses.
The U.S. Justice Department alleged Huawei stole trade secrets from six companies and lied about its dealings with Iran and North Korea, Nikkei Asia wrote. The trial is expected to last about three months.
