The EU Commission has clarified that the ban on Russian liquefied natural gas, set to begin in 2027, includes the trading or marketing of the commodity inside and outside the EU, Reuters reported Thursday, citing an EU letter sent to a shipping brokerage.
The letter sent from the office of EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen to Poten and Partners reportedly stated that EU operators will be prohibited from selling Russian LNG regardless of the final destination. In January, the 27 EU member states have adopted a regulation to phase out imports of both Russian pipeline gas and LNG by 2027.
This has cleared up earlier confusion for companies, such as TotalEnergies (TTE) and Naturgy, whose operations will be affected by the LNG ban as they either hold stakes or have supply contracts with Russia's Yamal LNG.
The EU Commission, TotalEnergies, and Naturgy did not immediately respond to' request for comment.
