Market Chatter: EDF Nuclear Plant Reduces Output Again Due to Swarm of Jellyfish

Electricite de France has been forced to scale back electricity production at its Gravelines nuclear power plant after a massive swarm of jellyfish clogged cooling systems, Bloomberg reported on Thursday, citing grid data.

The latest disruption began on Wednesday and has affected at least three reactors at the six-unit site in northern France. Four reactors with a combined capacity of 3,600 megawatts were fully offline as of 1 p.m. on Thursday, while output at two others was reduced.

The situation could be compounded by industrial action. Workers are due to begin a strike on Friday at EDF's separate Chinon nuclear plant in central France, potentially adding another source of uncertainty for nuclear output.

EDF did not immediately respond to a request for comment from.

US Natural Gas Update: Prices Jump on Hotter Forecast Across Eastern US

US natural gas futures rose in after-hours trading on Wednesday as persistent cooling demand and forecasts of hotter weather supported prices ahead of the September contract expiration.The front-month Henry Hub contract rose 3.29% to $2.861/MMBtu, while the continuous contract gained 2.98% to $2.905/MMBtu.Futures rose across most of the curve, led by the prompt month. Winter 2026-27 gained 2 cents, and Summer 2027 rose 1 cent at settlement, the Energy Buyers' Guide said.The Commodity Weather Group said Wednesday that forecasts had shifted hotter, with well-above-average temperatures expected across the eastern two-thirds of the US from Aug. 31 through Sept. 4, boosting cooling demand.Power-generation demand has strengthened in August, with month-to-date volumes above 2025 levels, the Energy Buyers' Guide said.
