Alibaba Group (BABA), ByteDance, and DeepSeek could receive permission from China to purchase a limited volume of Nvidia (NVDA) H200 chips to offset a shortage due to increasing demand for artificial intelligence chips, The Information reported Wednesday, citing sources with knowledge of the matter.
The Chinese government plans to allow the biggest AI companies to utilize the processors solely for model training on public data rather than sensitive customer information, according to the report.
Chinese authorities are still finalizing the precise allocation, which may total fewer than 200,000 chips, less than half of what the companies requested earlier this year, the media outlet reported.
Nvidia, Alibaba, ByteDance, and DeepSeek did not immediately respond to' requests for comment.
