Market Chatter: Cathay Financial Faces Scrutiny Amid Altercation Between Founding Family Member, Bank Chair

By

Cathay Financial (TPE:2882) is facing scrutiny after Tsai Chen-yu, a member of the founding family, allegedly confronted and assaulted Cathay United Bank Chairman Kuo Ming-jian at the bank's Taipei headquarters, Bloomberg News reported Wednesday.

Citing the bank, the report said the incident was linked to a disagreement over Kuo's outside board positions. Tsai, the younger brother of Cathay Financial Chairman Tsai Hong-tu, does not hold any official role within the group. The lender said disputes should be resolved through proper channels rather than physical actions.

Cathay Financial did not immediately respond to' request for comment on the matter.

The episode comes after an internal review found that Kuo's directorship at chip designer Alchip Technologies (TPE:3661) created conflicts involving eight funds managed by a Cathay asset management unit. The issue led to a fund value adjustment and losses of NT$454 million, after which Kuo stepped down from the Alchip board earlier this week, the news outlet said.
