BP (BP) is weighing a potential acquisition of Devon Energy's (DVN) South Texas operations, marking a renewed push by the British energy giant to expand its US shale footprint, Reuters reported on Thursday, citing industry sources.
The energy firm is targeting oil-heavy assets valued between $2 billion and $5 billion, including Devon's Eagle Ford position, which opened its data room in late August. BP and Devon did not immediately reply to' request for comment.
The move underscores a broader strategic pivot back to traditional oil and gas. After years of emphasizing low-carbon investments and navigating severe leadership churn, including five chief executives since 2020, BP has returned fossil fuels to the core of its business model.
BP currently manages its US onshore portfolio through its BPX Energy unit, which holds operations across the Eagle Ford, Permian, and Haynesville basins in Texas and Louisiana. BPX reported Q2 production of about 545,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, with its existing Eagle Ford operations accounting for about 205,000 boe/d of that total.
