Weakening demand for A5 wagyu beef in Japan, which accounted for over 75% of the wholesale market in April, has driven producers to compete on price in the overseas market, Nikkei Asia reported on Thursday.
Sales of A5 beef in Japan, which stood at 76.4% in April, come at a 10% to 20% premium over A4 beef. The average carcass price for A5 in Tokyo stood at 2,700 yen per kilogram in May, up 9% year on year.
The slump in domestic sales has led to a surge in overseas supply, with exports surging to 12,628 metric tons in 2025, up 17% year on year; however, the average price fell to 6,042 yen per kilogram in 2025.
